September 24th, 2024

Cue the confetti—Glass House Farms Lilac Diesel take home the GOLD! Based on independent lab test results from SC Labs and an esteemed panel of judges, the iconic California State Fair Cannabis Awards chose Lilac Diesel for the Golden Bear award in the Mixed Light category. In addition, it was also awarded THREE Gold Medals for Total Terpene, Ocimene and for Terpinolene, and a SILVER medal for CBGa.

What are the California State Fair Cannabis Awards?

The California State Fair has a 170-year-long reputation as one of the nation’s largest and most successful state fairs. According to The California State Fair, they “attract over 750,000 attendees annually and showcases California’s agricultural heritage, industry, and cultural diversity.” In addition to their beloved carnival attractions, live concerts, and food festival, the California State Fair is also known for several competition awards that center around local goods and agriculture.

These competition events typically feature wine, cheese, olive oil, and craft beer. However, with the legalization of cannabis, it was a no-brainer to add this plant to the mix. For the last three years, the California State Fair has proudly held its Cannabis Awards alongside the more “traditional” offerings. This state-agency-sanctioned competition is a first in the United States, making it a historical move for the already legendary fair.

In a historic move, this became the first year where the fair allowed the sale and consumption of cannabis on-site. This marks a huge step forward for the fair, its attendees, and the cannabis industry as a whole.

How are the awards determined?

In 2024, the California State Fair Cannabis Awards featured an expanded competition format showcasing three flower categories awarding 11 chemotypes, and six new product categories awarding 16 product types. Entry to each category was open to all licensed California cultivators and manufacturers, making it fair game for nearly anyone to get their product recognized. Each category features a Silver and Gold Medal for first and second place. The competition also features the coveted “Best of California” Golden Bear—the highest recognition any brand could hope to receive.

To determine the winners in the flower category through a blind test, the California State Fair partnered with SC Labs for the flower-only potency testing and Budist, the industry’s first professional ratings and review platform for judging across all categories. Budist is led by a diverse group of cannabis critics, otherwise known as “Budists”, which includes certified Ganjiers, cup judges, subject matter experts, and connoisseurs.
